RRB Recruitment Process Explained: From Application to Joining

Most Railway exam aspirants focus entirely on studying but have no idea about the actual recruitment process. They don't know how many stages there are, what happens after CBT-1, when document verification happens, or how long the whole thing takes. This lack of clarity creates anxiety and confusion. This article walks you through the COMPLETE RRB recruitment process — from the day the notification drops to the day you join as a Railway employee. Understanding the process gives you a strategic advantage because you can plan your preparation timeline accordingly.

Step 1-3: Notification, Application & CBT-1

Step 1 — Notification: RRB releases notifications through 21 regional Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB Allahabad, RRB Patna, RRB Mumbai, etc.). The notification comes on the official RRB websites. It contains: total vacancies, eligibility criteria, age limits, exam pattern, important dates. Pro tip: Apply for the RRB zone nearest to you — your exam center will be in that zone. Step 2 — Online Application: Fill the form online, upload photo and signature, pay the fee (usually ₹250-500, refundable for certain categories). Keep a printout of your application. Double-check every detail — wrong information can lead to rejection at document verification. Step 3 — CBT-1 (First Stage Computer Based Test): This is the QUALIFYING exam — not merit-based. Typically 100 questions in 90 minutes. Sections: General Awareness (40), Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (30). Negative marking: 1/3rd for each wrong answer. Cutoff: varies but usually 40-50% for General category, lower for reserved categories. If you clear CBT-1, you move to CBT-2.

Step 4-5: CBT-2 & Skill Tests

Step 4 — CBT-2 (Second Stage CBT): THIS is the exam that determines your merit and final selection. It's harder and more important than CBT-1. Typically 120 questions in 90 minutes. Same sections but higher difficulty level. Your rank is based on CBT-2 score. General category candidates typically need 65-75% to make it to the next round, though this varies based on vacancies and number of candidates. The GK section in CBT-2 is more detailed — expect questions on specific government schemes, recent appointments, and deeper science topics. This is where your consistent preparation pays off. Step 5 — Typing Test / CBAT (for specific posts): For NTPC posts like Senior Clerk and Junior Accounts Assistant: Typing test — 30 words per minute in English or 25 WPM in Hindi on a computer. For Assistant Loco Pilot: CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test) — tests your aptitude for operating trains. These are qualifying in nature — you either pass or fail, no merit ranking from these.

Step 6-8: Document Verification, Medical & Joining

Step 6 — Document Verification (DV): After clearing all CBTs and skill tests, you're called for document verification. Documents you MUST carry: 10th certificate (for age proof), 12th/Graduation marksheet and certificate, Caste certificate (if applicable, issued by competent authority), Income certificate (for fee refund), Domicile certificate, Aadhar card, 4-6 passport size photos, original application printout. PRO TIP: Start collecting these documents NOW, don't wait until DV stage. Many candidates get provisionally selected but face issues at DV because they can't produce the right documents. Get your caste certificate from the correct authority (SDM/Tehsildar). Step 7 — Medical Examination: Railway medical is stricter than most government jobs. Vision standards are important especially for NTPC and ALP posts. Categories: A1 (most strict, for Loco Pilot), B1, B2, C1, C2. For most NTPC posts, B1 or B2 standard applies. If you wear glasses, know your power — certain limits apply.

Step 8 — Panel & Joining: After clearing medical, your name goes on the 'panel' (selected list). Joining depends on vacancy availability and your rank. Sometimes joining happens within a month of panel, sometimes it takes 3-6 months. You'll receive a joining letter specifying your post, location, and reporting date. The ENTIRE process from notification to joining typically takes 8-12 months, sometimes longer. NTPC Posts and their pay scales (7th CPC): Station Master — Level 6 (₹35,400-1,12,400), Goods Guard — Level 5 (₹29,200-92,300), Commercial Apprentice — Level 5, Traffic Assistant — Level 4, Senior Clerk — Level 5, Junior Accounts Assistant — Level 5. Group D Posts: Track Maintainer, Helper, Pointsman — Level 1 (₹18,000-56,900). Remember: these are basic pay. With DA, HRA, and other allowances, take-home salary is significantly higher.

Age Relaxation & Category Benefits

Age limits and relaxations are crucial — know yours: For NTPC Graduate posts: 18-33 years (General). OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): +3 years. SC/ST: +5 years. PWD: +10 years (General), +13 years (OBC), +15 years (SC/ST). Ex-servicemen get additional relaxation. For Group D: 18-33 years with same relaxations. For ALP: 18-30 years. These age limits are as on the date specified in the notification — check carefully. Category certificates must be in the correct format. OBC certificate must have the non-creamy layer clause and be recently issued (within 1 year). SC/ST certificate must be from the correct issuing authority. Many candidates face rejection at DV due to incorrect format certificates — get this sorted well in advance.
