  • Direction: (1-5) In the given question, a sentence is divided into five parts out of which the last part is correct. Out of the remaining four, there are errors in three parts. Choose the part which doesn’t have an error. If all the four parts are correct, mark E i.e. All are correct as the answer.

    1. Question

It seems hopeless to pursue the enquiry (A)/ any further, but it was (B)/ clear that despite of Holmes’ ruse (C)/ we had no proof which Barrymore had (D)/ not been in London all the time. (E)

    Ans:2
    Only part B is correct.
The words ‘enquiry’ and ‘inquiry’ are often interchangeable but they are different. ‘Enquiry’ means to ask a question whereas ‘inquiry’ means a formal investigation. Hence the correct word to be used in part A is ‘inquiry’.
‘Despite’ and ‘in spite of’ are synonyms. But despite is not followed by ‘of’. The correct word to be used in part C is ‘in spite’.
Any clause starting with ‘which’ in a sentence is a non-descriptive clause. If the non-descriptive clause is removed from the sentence, the meaning of the sentence is not changed. But here if we remove the clause ‘which Barrymore had not been in London all the time’, the meaning would be affected. Hence, ‘that’ should be used instead of ‘which’.

  • 2. Question

Dr. Watson, the ever faithful friend of (A)/ Sherlock Holmes, although plays (B)/ a part in the case, he is primarily (C)/ significant as the narrator of the (D)/ story, The Hound of the Baskervilles. (E)

    Ans:5
All the parts of the given sentence are correct.

  • 3. Question

A lovely morning awaited Dr. Watson and Sir Henry (A)/ in the Baskerville Hall and it was to be admitted that the Hall (B)/ indeed was a more cheerful feel about it, (C)/ but Watson was still disturbing by the sound from (D)/ last night, that of a woman sobbing. (E)

      Ans:1
    The correct option is A.
In part B the clause ‘was to be be admitted’ is wrong, as ‘was to be’ means there is a choice. The correct answer is ‘had to be admitted’, which means there is an obligation.
‘Had’ should be used instead of ‘was’ in part C has we are talking about possession.
Since, the sentence is in past tense, the verb form should be past too in part D. the correct answer is ‘was still disturbed’.

  • 4. Question

Stapleton’s past history, being a (A)/ schoolmaster, was an important piece of information (B)/ that is providing in this chapter, although the importance of (C)/ this information was later realised when (D)/ Holmes checked up on it. (E)

    Ans:4
    The correct answer is D.
There is a missing preposition, ‘of’, missing in part A. here ‘of’ is used to denote a past connection.
The sentence is stating a fact here. So all the tenses should be in present, i.e. ‘is’ should be used instead of ‘was’ in part B.
Continuous tense is used when the task is still going on. In part C, the information has already been ‘provided’, so past tense is correct.

  • 5. Question

The extracts from my private diary that (A)/ forms the last chapter has bought my narrative up (B)/ to the eighteenth of October, a time which these (C)/ strange events began to move swiftly (D)/ towards theirs terrible conclusion.(E)

    Ans:4
    The correct answer is D.
The clause that follows ‘that’ are descriptive clause, means if removed, this clause would not effect the meaning of the sentence. Since, the clause ‘forms the last chapter’ is non-descriptive, ‘which’ should be used in part A.
‘Bought’ is simple past of ‘buy’. It should be ‘brought’ in part B.
When a relative pronoun is used to relate time, ‘when’ is used, not ‘which’.

Direction:(6-10) Read the sentence to find out whether there is any error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. The number of that part is the answer. If the given sentence is correct as it is, the answer is (E) i.e. No error. Ignore errors of punctuation if any.

    • 6. Question

Your doubts would (A)/ kill your chances (B)/ and opportunities in life as they (C)/ goes hand in hand. (D)/ No Error (E)

    Ans:4
The error is in part (D) of the sentence. The pronoun “they” is plural; therefore, it would be followed by a plural verb. So, replace ‘goes’ with ‘go’.

  • 7. Question

Those who want more and more (A)/ storing space for their (B)/ content can understand the importance of (C)/ portable storage solutions. (D)/ No Error (E)

    Ans:2
The error is in part (B) of the sentence. The use of gerund or present participle “storing” is incorrect here as the sentence requires a noun. Therefore, replace ‘storing’ with ‘storage’.

  • 8. Question

I think sustainability (A)/ agenda, energy efficiency, (B)/ mobile banking and infrastructure (C)/ sharing are important issues. (D)/ No Error (E)

      Ans:5

  • 9. Question

I am always careful that I (A)/ should never be the cause of humiliation to (B)/ music especially while (C)/ travel and perform abroad. (D) / No Error (E)

    Ans:4
The error is in part (D) of the sentence. “While” is followed by continuous form of verb. Therefore, replace ‘travel and perform’ with ‘travelling and performing’.

  • 10. Question

He hired two coolies (A)/ because the luggage was (B)/ too much heavy (C)/ for one. (D)/ No error. (E)

    Ans:3
The error is in part (C) of the sentence. Replace ‘too much’ with ‘much too’.

The structures for much too and too much are:

    Much too + adjective

Example: Much too painful, much too careless, much too wicked

    Too much + noun

Example: too much pain, too much carelessness, too much insincerity

Certain nouns are always used in singular and followed by singular verbs. These are not used in the plural sense and do not take on plural verbs.  For e.g. hair, issue, advice, information, scenery, luggage, mischief, bread, abuse, furniture, land, business, machinery, poultry etc. (Detailed discussion right after examples). Thus, ‘luggage was’ is correct.
