  • Direction: (1-5)In the following question, a sentence is divided into five parts out of which the last part is correct. Out of the remaining four, there are errors in three parts. Choose the part which doesn’t have an error. If all the four parts are correct, mark E i.e. All are correct as the answer.

    1. Question

A CBI recorded the transcripts between (A)/ the retired-jailed Odisha HC judge I M Quddusi, (B)/ an allegedly middleman Vishwanath Agarwala (C)/ and BP Yadav of Prasad Education Trust whom is (D)/ accused of seeking approbation from them. (E)

    Ans:2
    Only part B is correct.
Part A is wrong because India has one CBI. And only India has CBI. Different countries have different agencies. So we must use the definite article ‘the’ instead of ‘a’.
Part C is wrong because middleman is a noun, so the word before it should be an adjective. Allegedly is an adverb. It must be replaced by ‘alleged’ which is an adjective.
Part D is wrong and whom must be replaced by who.
  • 2. Question

The same case was bought up (A)/ when a PIL was filed in the apex courts (B)/ and it was mentioned before a bench head (C)/ by Justice Jasti Chelameswar, who later (D)/ referred it to a five-bench judge. (E)

    Ans:4
    Only Part D is correct.
Part A is wrong because the correct word that must be used is ‘brought’ and not ‘bought’. Brought is the past form of ‘bring’ and bought is the past form of ‘buy’. The case can’t take with it the reference of buying something.
Part B is wrong because India has only one Supreme Court. Apex means ‘the top or highest part of something’. So the highest part of ‘judiciary’ is the Supreme Court of India. Therefore we can’t use ‘courts’.
Part C is wrong because ‘head’ is a noun. Here we need the verb form of it, which is ‘headed’.
  • 3. Question

Amid outcry on his home country after (A)/ his racist remarks, US President Donald Trump have been (B)/ awarded a ‘Medal of Bravery’ by the (C)/ residence of Logar province of Afghanistan (D)/ over his stand against Pakistan recently. (E)

      Ans:3
    Only Part C is correct
Part A: Incorrect preposition ‘on’ has been used in the sentence. It must be replaced by ‘in’.
Part B: Donald Trump is a single person; hence has should be used instead of have.
Part D: ‘residence’ refers to the place where a person lives. The place can’t give awards but the people living in it can. Hence, the correct word is ‘residents’.
  • 4. Question

The Indian Coast Guard recover (A)/ the bodies of the missing crew member (B)/ of the ill-fate Pawanhans chopper (C)/ which crashed off the (D)/ Mumbai coast on Saturday. (E)

    Ans:4
    Only Part D is correct.
Part A: The sentence has a past context as the crash is an event of the past. Hence, recover must be replaced by recovered.
Pat B: The segment is not in sync. Bodies and crew member must agree with each other. It should either be bodies of the crew members or body of the crew member.
Part C: Fate is a noun but here we want to use it as an adjective. So, the correct form is ‘ill-fated’.
  • 5. Question

Kohli’s 153-run knock earned the (A)/ praise of Proteas speedstar Morne Morkel (B)/ who admit that the opposing (C)/ team has the potential of beat (D)/ South Africa in their own home. (E)

    Ans:1
    Only Part A is correct.
Part B: The word ‘speedstar’ is wrong. The correct word is ‘speedster’. It means a person or thing that operates well at high speed, eg: a fast car.
Part C: The entire sentence is in past tense, so we must use ‘admitted’.
Part D: Either we must use ‘potential to beat’ or potential of ‘beating’.
Direction: (6-10) Read the sentence to find out whether there is any error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. If the given sentence is correct as it is, the answer is ‘No error’. Ignore the errors of punctuation, if any.
    6. Question
There is no one/ I have met or heard of/ whom I can consider knowledgeable/ than my English teacher.
    Ans:3
The error lies in the third part of the sentence.
Use of ‘than’ suggests that the sentence makes a comparison between two people. In such a case comparative degree is used before the adjective. Therefore, more should be written before knowledgeable.
  • 7. Question

The teacher instructed the students/ to have a thoroughly reading/ of each chapter/ mentioned in the syllabus.

    Ans:2
The error lies in the second part of the sentence.
Thoroughly should be replaced by thorough. Thoroughly has been derived the term thorough.
Thoroughly is used as an adverb and means in a thorough or complete manner. Thorough is used as an adjective and means carefully without missing or omitting any detail. The word reading has been used as a noun and should be qualified by an adjective.
  • 8. Question

Our designated opening batsmen often chose / the safety and security of the middle order, / forcing some middle order batsman / whom couldn’t argue, to open for India./ No error

      Ans:4
The error lies in the last part of the sentence.
Whom should be replaced by who.Whom should be used to refer to the object of a verb or preposition. When in doubt, try this simple trick: If you can replace the word with “he”’ or “’she,” use who. If you can replace it with “him” or “her,” use whom.

    • Who should be used to refer to the subject of a sentence.
    • Whom should be used to refer to the object of a verb or preposition.
  • 9. Question

The shortest boy of the school/ didn’t hesitate to join/ the basketball team which/ was full of tall boys.

    Ans:1
The error lies in the first part of the sentence.
After superlative adjectives, majorly two prepositions are used: of and in.
We use in with a singular word referring to a place or group.
Eg: I am the happiest woman in the world.
We use of before plurals, before time periods such as year/month.
Eg: Sunday is the best day of the week.
Here, in this case, the subject is the ‘school’, thus, it should be ‘in the school’.
  • 10. Question

Sometimes, when you are used to/ see a player in the commentary/ box over a long period, you tend to/ forget what a great player he was.

    Ans:2
The error lies in the second part of the sentence. The form V + -ing is called a gerund if it serves as a noun. In the given sentence “to” has been used as a preposition (in a prepositional phrase) and not an infinitive, thus, the gerund form “seeing” is correct. E.G. I look forward to meeting my relatives. Thus, option B is correct. Here, ‘used to’ is used in the present tense to indicate that one has a habit of doing something.
